How does IMAlerts work?
IMAlerts was designed to be easy to use, both for end users and for
SharePoint administrators.
For your convenience, IMAlerts is preconfigured for
Google Talk,
but the Jabber/XMPP network used by IMAlerts can be easily changed.
- SharePoint users create alert subscriptions for a list (such as a Document
Library, Tasks list, etc.) or a list item (such as a document, a Wiki page, a Calendar
item, etc.) using familiar Web pages.
IMAlerts subscription management interface is very similar to that for email alerts
subscriptions (see screenshots).
- IMAlerts watches subscribers' "presence" on the XMPP network.
- When an event occurs in SharePoint (such as a document is modified), if this
event matches one or more of alert subscriptions, IMAlerts creates an alert message,
which includes information about the event.
- If the user is currently available (logged on to the XMPP network on any device,
with her username/JabberID), IMAlerts sends her an instant message with the event's
details.
Otherwise, the message (alert) is scheduled for delivery and will be sent to this
user as soon as she becomes available on the network.
